SUMMARY:Blood Drive 2024
DESCRIPTION:Sign Up for the CTU Foundation Blood Drive and Panel Discussion\nOn Thursday\, February 1\, between 2 and 7 pm\, we are hosting CTU Foundation’s Annual Blood Drive at the CTU Center\, 1901 W. Carroll Ave. Sign up now to reserve your time slot to donate blood. \nThis year\, to commemorate Black History Month\, the blood drive focuses on the importance of sickle cell awareness and maternal health\, with the panel of doctors and educators sharing the legacy of Henrietta Lacks\, whose own maternal health struggle was identified by doctors when she was pregnant and complained about a knot in her stomach and then was treated for cervical cancer when her unique cells were stolen for research that revolutionized sickle cell treatment. Lack’s cells (HeLa Cells) were used to create hydroxyurea treatment that 70% of Sickle Cell Disease patients use today. The panel will also highlight the unfair treatment of sickle cell patients\, the lack of sickle cell crisis teams at the hospitals\, and the accessibility of the new CRISPR treatment. And to bring awareness that most Black women do not learn about sickle cell trait until they are pregnant and discuss the signs. Sickle cell disease affects 1 in 365 Black Americans\, which is 10 times the rate for all Americans. \nPanel Discussion on the Science and Treatment of Sickle Cell Disease and its Intersection with Maternal Health is from 5 to 6 pm.\nAll are invited\, even if you are not donating blood for the blood drive! \nThe panelists will discuss what sickle cell disease is and why there’s a disparate impact on people of color. We are hosting this panel to open Black History Month to honor the contributions of Henrietta Lacks and other Black scientists and to honor those who continue fighting against this disease today. \nIn 2021\, The American Red Cross launched a national initiative to reach more blood donors who are Black to help patients with sickle cell disease and improve health outcomes. In the U.S.\, it is estimated that over 100\,000 people have sickle cell disease and may require regular blood transfusions throughout their lifetime. Blood transfusions are essential in managing the very real pain and long-term health of those with sickle cell disease\, and blood donations from individuals of the same race or similar ethnicity and blood type are the most effective way to help patients experiencing a sickle cell crisis. Since the majority of people with sickle cell are of African descent\, blood donations from Black individuals are critical in helping those suffering from this disease. \nRegister Here \nIf you are at least 17 years old\, 16 years old with a signed Red Cross parental/guardian consent form where state permits\, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in good health\, you may be eligible to give blood. High school students and other donors 18 years old and younger must also meet other height and weight requirements. \nGiving blood is safe\, and simple and helps save lives. Each pint of blood that is donated may be helping as many as three people. The American Red Cross is the largest single provider of blood in the country. They provide blood to 3\,000 hospitals across the country. About 38\,000 people in the United States need blood each day. Those people count on volunteer donors to give them a chance at life. \nMany individuals who are Black have distinct markers on their red blood cells that make their donations ideal for helping patients with sickle cell disease. More than half of blood donors who are Black have blood that is free of C\, E and K antigens – making them the best match for those with sickle cell disease.  \nSponsored by The American Red Cross\, Sickle Cell Disease Association of Illinois\, National Pan-Hellenic Council of Chicago\, and the Chicago Teachers Union Foundation.

SUMMARY:Pipeline
DESCRIPTION:The CTU Foundation offers this group rate of a discounted price of $20 (normally $35). \nA mother’s hopes for her son clash with an educational system rigged against him in PIPELINE\, the riveting new play by Dominique Morisseau (Skeleton Crew). \nNya\, an inner-city public high school teacher\, is committed to her students but desperate to give her only son Omari opportunities they’ll never have. When a controversial incident at his upstate private school threatens to get him expelled\, Nya must confront his rage and her own choices as a parent. But will she be able to reach him before a world beyond her control pulls him away?  \nWith profound compassion and lyricism\, PIPELINE brings an urgent conversation powerfully to the fore. Don’t miss this deeply moving story of a mother’s fight to give her son a future — without turning her back on the community that made him who he is. Directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz (War at LCT3\, Red Speedo).

SUMMARY:Displaced Black Educators in Chicago Public Schools
DESCRIPTION:“African-American teachers are disappearing. The ranks of Black substitute teachers have also declined significantly. Substitutes are not treated with respect. They are given little to no support and in many schools\, when an incident happens\, security is called but never arrives\, yet the sub may be blamed for not reporting an incident…The most adversely affected and readily displaced are African-American teachers that are older and mostly women.” ~The Black Caucus of the Chicago Teachers Union \nJoin the discussion about the rights and obligations all teachers need to know when working within the Chicago Public School system.

SUMMARY:Learning Curve
DESCRIPTION:“NOT TO BE MISSED!” (Chicago Tribune)\n“A MASTERWORK!” (Chicago Sun-Times)\nCreated by Albany Park Theater Project and Third Rail Projects\nExtended through November 19\nNew block of tickets on sale August 3 at 10am\nCHICAGO TRIBUNE//Chris Jones: “The young man… looked me in the eye and I looked back. I gave the question a lot of thought. ‘I don’t know\,’ I said. For I did not\, and all of what had come to me as possible solutions felt either impractical or ridiculous or humiliating\, or all three at once. The kid playing the role shot me a look\, partly of shared experience\, partly critical of the inadequacy of my response. Those were\, I thought … precisely the right responses for an actor in the moment and I marveled\, and marvel still\, at the sophistication of that young actor’s choices. But then … Learning Curve is a very sophisticated piece of theater. There are\, after all\, 26 sets\, all of which are lit\, many of which are filled with complex movement and some of which feel more like art installations … Learning Curve embraces the symbolic\, the inner life of the kid\, the deeper context … [and] teaches many things\, not the least of which is just how difficult it can be to get through a day in an inner-city school\, mostly because students have so little power. So it is not to be missed.”
