SUMMARY:Displaced Black Educators in Chicago Public Schools
DESCRIPTION:“African-American teachers are disappearing. The ranks of Black substitute teachers have also declined significantly. Substitutes are not treated with respect. They are given little to no support and in many schools\, when an incident happens\, security is called but never arrives\, yet the sub may be blamed for not reporting an incident…The most adversely affected and readily displaced are African-American teachers that are older and mostly women.” ~The Black Caucus of the Chicago Teachers Union \nJoin the discussion about the rights and obligations all teachers need to know when working within the Chicago Public School system.

SUMMARY:Learning Curve
DESCRIPTION:“NOT TO BE MISSED!” (Chicago Tribune)\n“A MASTERWORK!” (Chicago Sun-Times)\nCreated by Albany Park Theater Project and Third Rail Projects\nExtended through November 19\nNew block of tickets on sale August 3 at 10am\nCHICAGO TRIBUNE//Chris Jones: “The young man… looked me in the eye and I looked back. I gave the question a lot of thought. ‘I don’t know\,’ I said. For I did not\, and all of what had come to me as possible solutions felt either impractical or ridiculous or humiliating\, or all three at once. The kid playing the role shot me a look\, partly of shared experience\, partly critical of the inadequacy of my response. Those were\, I thought … precisely the right responses for an actor in the moment and I marveled\, and marvel still\, at the sophistication of that young actor’s choices. But then … Learning Curve is a very sophisticated piece of theater. There are\, after all\, 26 sets\, all of which are lit\, many of which are filled with complex movement and some of which feel more like art installations … Learning Curve embraces the symbolic\, the inner life of the kid\, the deeper context … [and] teaches many things\, not the least of which is just how difficult it can be to get through a day in an inner-city school\, mostly because students have so little power. So it is not to be missed.”
