Growth Mindset – The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
In this session, participants analyze the latest hot topic in educational philosophy, the ‘Growth Mindset.’ Since Carol Dweck first examined the brain and its correspondence to talent, her theory of the growth mindset has been praised and criticized. Attendees will assess contrasting perspectives of the growth-mindset approach and how this can be confused with effort, and not student learning. Participants will discuss how this theory can have far-reaching implications both in and beyond the classroom. Participants will leave the session having a better understanding of how motivating students to achieve through the idea of a ‘growth’ vs. ‘fixed’ mindset can detract from addressing students’ real social-emotional needs to be able to learn and prosper. This session is aligned with the CPS Framework for Teaching Components 1a, 1b, 2b, and 4d.
