OSHA Professional Development
The OSHA Professional Development Trainer Program is a partnership with CTUF Quest Center, American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Health Issues, and Chicago Public Schools to provide career and technical educators the skills, training resources, and OSHA General Industry trainer card to teach 10- and 30-hour General Industry classes and receive OSHA student completion cards. Participants will become authorized by meeting training and industry safety experience requirements provided during an intensive, in-person, summer professional development program instructed by the AFT Health and Safety Issues OSHA Outreach Instructor Trainers authorized by the DOL.
During the CTU OSHA Professional Development Trainer Program, participants will complete two courses: OSHA #511 – Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry, a mandatory prerequisite course to familiarize participants with OSHA standards and regulations to be better equipped to answer students’ questions, and OSHA #501 – Trainer Course in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry. Each course is 26 clock hours, 6.5 hours per day. The training will be hosted at the CTU Center, 1901 W. Carroll Ave., during the summer break (8 days in total), July 15 – 18, and July 29 – August 1, 2024.
Additional Participant Incentives*
- Earn 52 ISBE PD Hours for completing OSHA #501 and #511 from the CTUF Quest Center.
- ICWUC Center for Worker Health & Safety Education will pay a $110 daily stipend.
- CTUF/CPS will pay 4 hours per day at the non-instructional rate.
- AFT will reimburse for mileage and lunch will be provided.
*Attendance is mandatory for all class days and class times (8:00 am – 3:15 pm) to receive any credit, compensation or reimbursement. No partial credit or payment is allowed.

OSHA #511 – Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry
This course covers OSHA Standards, policies, and procedures in general industry. Topics include scope and application of the OSHA General Industry Standards, general industry principles and special emphasis on those areas in general industry which are most hazardous. Upon course completion students will have the ability to define general industry terms found in the OSHA General Industry Standards, identify hazards which occur in general industry, locate and determine appropriate OSHA General Industry Standards, policies, and procedures, and describe the use of OSHA General Industry Standards and regulations to supplement an ongoing safety and health program. Minimum student contact hours: 26

OSHA #501 – Trainer Course in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry
This course is designed for individuals interested in teaching the 10 and 30-hour general industry safety and health Outreach training program to their employees and other interested groups. Using the OSHA General Industry Standards as a guide, special emphasis is placed on those topics required in the 10- and 30-hour programs as well as those that are most hazardous. Students are briefed on effective instructional approaches and use of visual aids and handouts. This course allows the student to become a trainer in the OSHA Outreach Training Program, to conduct both 10- and 30-hour General Industry Outreach classes, and to issue cards to participants after verifying course completion. Students who wish to participate as authorized trainers in the OSHA Outreach Training Program must prepare a presentation on an assigned OSHA General Industry Outreach Training Program topic individually or as part of a group and successfully pass a written exam at the end of the course.
