Congratulations to Our Newly RENEWED National Board Certified Teachers
The announcement of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) who have renewed their certificate is cause for celebration because thousands of more teachers have shown that they teach to the highest standards in the profession. Research makes clear that the 122,000 NBCTs currently teaching in our nation’s schools have a significant impact on student learning. There are currently more than 2000 NBCTs in CPS. Students of all backgrounds are the beneficiaries.
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards has announced that 4,786 teachers have renewed their National Board Certification and demonstrated that they continue to teach to the highest professional standards. 105 of them are Chicago Public School teachers! Many of those teachers received support through the CTU/CPS NBCT Renewal Study Group program, an outgrowth of Quest Center’s Nurturing Teacher Leadership candidate support program. All CPS NBCTs are welcomed to learn about Renewal and work with a Renewal mentor who will guide them through the process. All mentors are NBCTs who have renewed their National Board certificates. There is no cost for this support.
“The future becomes brighter as we all work towards an accomplished teacher for every student, in every classroom, across the country.”
– Peggy Brookins, NBCT, President and CEO of the National Board Professional Teaching Standards
There are currently more than 20,000 teachers pursuing National Board certification, a mark of distinction that recognizes accomplished teaching. National Board standards were created by teachers, for teachers. Lynn Cherkasky-Davis, Director of Teacher Leadership and the CTU/CPS Manager of National Board Certification, served on the Early Childhood Generalist Standards development team. National Board Certification is a voluntary process that acknowledges that teachers have met those standards.
